About GigRank
GigRank was built by freelancers who know how hard it is to get noticed on Upwork even when you're great at what you do. Our goal is to help you work within Upwork's real rules and recommendations — using only what Upwork publishes and supports — so your profile is clear, complete, and aligned with how the platform works.
We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Upwork Global Inc. All limits, behaviors, and best practices described here come from Upwork's own help articles and public resources. Those can change at any time; when in doubt, check Upwork's current documentation.
How Upwork profiles actually work
Upwork gives every freelancer one main profile (plus optional specialized profiles). That profile has fixed limits and a structure that search and client browsing use. Here's what Upwork publishes — and what we use in GigRank.
Professional title
Upwork's official help states that your profile title has a maximum of 70 characters. It's one of the main fields clients see in search and on your profile. Many guides (and our tool) suggest keeping titles in the 40–50 character range so they stay scannable and keyword-focused. GigRank helps you write titles that fit within that space and clearly describe what you offer.
Profile overview (description)
The overview has a 5,000 character maximum. Only the first part is visible before clients click "Read more" — Upwork typically shows about 200–250 characters in that preview (we use 220 as a safe reference). So the opening lines act like a meta description: they need to hook and inform quickly. The rest of the overview can back that up with proof, process, and a clear call to action. GigRank highlights that first segment and helps you optimize for it.
Skills
You can add up to 15 skills to your profile. Upwork uses these (among other signals) for matching and search. Using all 15 with relevant, specific skills is generally better than leaving slots empty or repeating similar terms. GigRank checks that you're within the 15-skill limit and suggests a focused set based on your niche.
Hourly rate, availability, and other fields
Upwork lets you set an hourly rate within their allowed range (e.g. $1–$999/hr in many categories), availability (hours per week), and other profile elements. Your Job Success Score (JSS), badges (e.g. Rising Talent, Top Rated, Expert-Vetted), and whether you use Upwork's "Boost" feature (bidding Connects for higher visibility) also affect how and where you appear. We don't control any of that — we only help you present your profile within the limits and best practices Upwork describes.
What Upwork says about search and visibility
Upwork does not publish the exact search or ranking formula. From their public help and resources, we know that:
- Relevance matters — how well your profile and proposals match what clients are looking for.
- Profile completeness and quality are encouraged; incomplete or thin profiles are less likely to perform well.
- Job Success Score and talent badges (Rising Talent, Top Rated, etc.) are visible to clients and can influence trust and visibility.
- "Boosted" profiles (using Connects to bid for visibility) can appear more prominently in search and recommendations.
GigRank does not claim to "game" or reverse-engineer Upwork's algorithm. We focus on what Upwork states publicly: strong titles, clear overviews (especially the first 200–250 characters), a full and relevant skills list, and a complete, professional profile. That's what we analyze and help you improve.
What GigRank does — and doesn't do
We analyze your existing profile (or help you build one from scratch) against the limits and guidance above. We suggest copy-paste-ready improvements for your title, overview, and skills, and we flag things like the first 220 characters of your description and your use of the 15 skill slots. We validate everything against Upwork's published limits so you don't have to guess.
We do not have access to Upwork's internal systems, we cannot change your Job Success Score or badges, and we cannot guarantee placement in search or more invites. We can only help you present a profile that fits Upwork's rules and follows the best practices they recommend.
Where to verify this yourself
Upwork's own help center is the source of truth. For current limits and behavior, check:
- Your profile title and overview — character limits and overview structure.
- Build your profile: the essentials — required and optional profile fields.
- What Boosted Profiles mean for clients — how paid visibility (Boost) works.
If Upwork changes their limits or help content, we will update our tool and this page where possible. Always confirm critical details on Upwork's site.
